What’s Changing on 1 July 2025

Zoe Wainscott 25 June 2025

As the new financial year begins, several key updates are rolling out that could impact employers, apprentices, and workers across the building and construction industry. Here’s a quick summary of what to expect from 1 July 2025:

  • Workcover QLD: No change.
  • Superannuation Guarantee (SG): The SG rate will increase from 11.5% to 12% of an employee’s ordinary time earnings. This is the final step in the legislated SG increases, designed to strengthen retirement outcomes for Australian workers.
  • Apprentice Wages: 3.5% Increase to Minimum Wages: The Fair Work Commission has announced a 3.5% increase to the National Minimum Wage and all modern award minimum wage rates, effective from the first full pay period starting on or after 1 July 2025. This increase applies to apprentices covered by modern awards, with specific rates varying based on the award, year of apprenticeship, and age.
  • Updated Allowances:
    •  Living Away From Home Allowance (LAFHA): Apprentices who need to move away from their parental home to undertake or continue their apprenticeship may be eligible for an increased LAFHA, providing additional financial support.
    • Disability Apprentice Wage Subsidy: Employers hiring apprentices with disabilities will receive increased support payments from 1 July 2025.

For up-to-date pay rates or award-specific information, visit the Fair Work Pay and Conditions Tool or consult your industry association.

If you’re an employer or apprentice, now’s the time to review your payroll, allowances, and contracts to ensure you’re compliant with the latest updates. Staying informed means staying ahead.
