12 Profit Levers to Supercharge Returns in Your Construction Business

Xact Accounting 30 October 2025

Running a building business is not easy. You juggle projects, staff, clients, and cash flow, yet sometimes the harder you work, the less it feels like you are getting ahead. That was the starting point for our recent webinar, “12 Profit Levers Builders Must Pull to Supercharge Returns,” organised and hosted by ProCalc, where Xact Accounting was invited to present alongside The Professional Builder and BuildXact.

Dylan Eve, Partner and Client Director at Xact Accounting, joined the panel to share insights on how construction business owners can take control of their numbers and drive sustainable growth.

In just 60 minutes, the session gave construction business owners a practical roadmap to protect margins, win better clients, and create a business that rewards the effort that goes into it.

The power of pulling the right levers

The session opened with a challenge every construction business owner understands. Why does hard work not always translate to healthy profit? The answer, as the panel showed, lies in using the right levers in your business to gain control of time, margin, and cash.

Owen Chambers from The Professional Builder helped attendees calculate their Professional Builder Rate and identify the tasks that need to be delegated or systemised.

Dylan Eve from Xact Accounting brought it all together with the financial clarity piece, showing how the right structure and visibility can turn hard work into sustainable growth.

Julian Krishnan from Buildxact explained how detailed estimating, live pricing, and integrated systems remove blind spots and stop profit from leaking mid-project.

Richard Armstrong from ProCalc concluded the session by showing how accurate costing and quoting tools can help builders set the right prices from the start and protect profit throughout every stage of the project.

Dylan Eve: “Knowing your numbers is where profit starts”

Dylan’s section focused on one of the biggest issues in the industry. Many builders think they are running at strong margins, but the numbers often tell a different story.

“If you don’t have clear job costing and regular reporting, you’re flying blind,” Dylan explained. “Margins that look healthy early often fade by handover because the systems behind them are not tight enough.”

He outlined how construction businesses can create a more reliable, profitable model by:

  • Tracking real-time job performance rather than waiting for month-end surprises
  • Understanding markup versus margin to stop profit from slipping away
  • Building the right structure early to protect assets and manage tax effectively
  • Forecasting cash flow across claims, payroll, suppliers, and the ATO, so you always know what is coming next

The key takeaway was simple. Clean data drives confident decisions. When owners can see where every dollar goes, they can steer their business with control, not guesswork.

Turning insights into action

Every topic is connected to a bigger goal – helping construction business owners stop reacting and start leading. The panel showed how small process changes, supported by the right tools and structure, can create significant improvements in cash, time, and peace of mind.

“You can’t manage what you can’t see,” Dylan said. “Financial visibility is not compliance. It is about confidence.”

If you missed the live session, all registrants received a free recording to revisit the strategies shared.
